Our History

Unitarian Universalism is a vibrant and progressive faith that emerged from the merging of two rich religious traditions: Unitarianism and Universalism. The Universalist Church of America was founded in 1793, bringing together a diverse community dedicated to universal salvation and inclusivity. Meanwhile, the American Unitarian Association, established in 1825, championed reason, science, and the inherent worth of every individual. In 1961, these two traditions united to form the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), creating a new religious movement that honors and builds upon their shared legacies.
Unitarian Universalism is more than a fusion of two religions; it’s a dynamic and evolving tradition that continues to draw from its historical roots while pushing boundaries in the quest for social justice and spiritual exploration. Since the merger, Unitarian Universalism has flourished as a beacon of liberal religion, advocating for equality, environmental stewardship, and human rights, while embracing a diverse range of beliefs and practices.
